Rhino calves can weigh between 30 and 45 kilograms and can usually stand within the first few hours after being born. The gestation period, or pregnancy, of a rhino is 15 to 16 months and female rhinos will have just one baby or ‘calf’ at a time. The poaching of southern white (Ceratotherium simum simum) and black rhinos (Diceros bicornis) is of particular importance due to the significant economic. Black rhinos may also leave their smell against a rock or tree by rubbing their head to mark out their territory. Urine spraying is a common form of scent-marking as well as dung, or poo piles, known as ‘middens’. Scent-marking is the most important method of communication for rhinos. The most notable difference between white and black rhinos are their hooked upper lip, compared to the white rhinos square lip. A key identifying difference between it and the White Rhino is its short forehead and very muscular, mobile mouth ending in a very sharply pointed upper lip. They may also grunt as a way of communicating amongst themselves. The most common noises made by rhinos are sniffing and snorting sounds, particularly when they are disturbed. ![]() An adult weighs from 800 to 1400 kilograms (1,760 to 3,080 pounds), some may weigh 1820 kilograms (4,000 pounds), with the females being smaller than the males. They spend the day removing ticks and clearing parasites, but also by raising the alarm if there is any danger approaching. Black Rhinos are actually grey in colour and distinguished from their relative the White Rhino by lip shape and diet. An adult Black Rhinoceros stands 140 170 centimetres (57.9 63 inches) high at the shoulder and is 3.3 3.6 metres (10.8 11.8 feet) in length.
